The Cyprus International Film Festival collaborates with the Cyprus branch of the international organization "Women in Film and Television" and organizes on Monday, November 15, at 19:00 at the Larnaca Municipal Theater within the Larnaca Biennale an event that includes music, screenings and an open discussion on "Equal opportunities in the Audiovisual Sector – Stereotypes and Facts”. The Gender Equality Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus Ms. Iosifina Antoniou will open the discussion. Directors and representatives from the Cyprus Directors Association, RIK, the Cyprus News Agency all will attend. The music program will be presented by the Russian pianist Tatiana Stupak, the violinist Olivera Rialas with songs by the Russian Natalia Kriventsova.
This will be followed by screenings of two award-winning feature-length documentaries by the directors and members of the newly formed Women in Film and Television, Cyprus chapter, "She Should Run - Cyprus" by Petra Terzi and "Life Starts at 90" by Bejay Browne.
The Cyprus International Film Festival, in addition to the global artistic interest with applications from 40 countries from the six continents, also offers a political benefit for Cyprus. The Cyprus International Film Festival promotes a unified Cyprus to the international press where movies from all over the world are shown and distinguished. The official program of the Festival has 111 films, 20 of which are Greek, of recent production from the six continents.
The Festival promotes new talents and debut directors with their first short film in the category "CYIFF Got Talent" and with their first feature film in the category "Golden Aphrodite". All other feature and short films fall into the "Veteran" category. The Festival is a pioneer, since its foundation in 2006, with the screening of films by expatriate directors of Greek origin in the category "Nostimon Imar". The Festival gives a new opportunity to Greek and Cypriot directors for an international festival participation.
The 16th Cyprus International Film Festival will also present the following events:
- films with a woman director and / or producer, for the "Aphrodite Cinematic Award",
- films in the category: "50/50" with equal participation of men and women in credits,
- human rights films with an emphasis on tackling domestic violence,
- CYIFF Scriptwriting Workshop “Bridging the Second Act” - with the acclaimed Scott Simpson
This year's VIP jury consists of prominent personalities from the field of cinema with international distinctions, such as the Indian producer Vivek Singhania, the American producer George F. Roberson, the director Bejay Browne, the screenwriter Scott Simpson from New York and others.
The Festival invites cinephiles from Nicosia and Larnaca to join the independent jury to see and distinguish films in various categories. Interested judges, volunteers as well as those who wish to participate in the screenwriting seminar on 14/11, can contact 99798112 and [email protected]
The Golden Aphrodite awards were commissioned to the artists Leni Loizou and Michail Christofinis. This year we celebrate the arts by taking a turn to where tradition meets contemporary Art. Choosing ceramic sculptures this year felt natural due to the island’s rich history and tradition. The awards are stoneware ceramic sculptures handmade, double fired and glazed at 1200degrees, a time consuming process involving earth, water, fire and air to create a uniquely beautiful and organic result. The artists worked for two months to complete this process in collaboration with local artists and businesses.
The Cyprus International Film Festival “Golden Aphrodite” holds the EFFE Label “Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe”. The EFFE Label is Europe’s quality stamp for remarkable arts festivals showing their engagement in the field of the arts, community involvement and international openness.
The Festival thanks K-Cineplex, the Municipality of Larnaca and the Larnaca Biennale, the National Mechanism for Women's Rights, Ardgon Advertising and the foreign embassies in Cyprus for their cooperation. Communication sponsors are RIK, ERT3, INSPIRE TV®, 95.1 Cosmo Radio, RadioMore.gr, Plus102.6 and Cine @ Art magazine.
