More about the event:
Breach is a festival dedicated to Improvisation and Experimental music.
Breach’s mission is to boost and support these practices in Cyprus: free improvisation, free jazz, contemporary classical music, experimental electronic music, sound-art, as well as many other uncharted music making traditions.
This year is the second edition of the Breach Festival in partnership with the Irtijal festival in Lebanon - the largest festival in Beirut and Space21 festival in Kurdistan/Iraq. The participating musicians come from Cyprus, Lebanon, Kurdistan/Iraq, and Germany, and are accomplished in the field of improvisation and experimental music with a long history of performing at recognised venues and festivals around the world.

Workshop: “A New Forge: Materialisms, Sound and Computation” by Emiddio Vasquez
Part I: 10:00-12:00 - Context and MaxMSP Crash course
Part II: 13:30-16:00 - Modalys in MaxMSP
Description:
The workshop will take a close look at physical modelling as a technique to synthesize sound, by using a hybrid of MaxMSP and modal synthesis. To do so we will consider notions of computation, digital sound composition and synthesis, as material processes by engaging critically with the ideological assumptions and constructions on both domains and the implemented technics.
Following the ongoing discussions of (neo-)materialist thinking and drawing inspiration from the story of the “Pythagorean hammers” that was crucial to both Western philosophy and tonality, the workshop will introduce users to core issues at stake when considering digital instrument building, ultimately inviting them to form “a new forge” and leave the workshop with their own individual materially-dependent digital instruments.
