About the event:
Following the Cyprus premiere of Kostas Mannouris' play Flock, the newly-formed theatre group from Larnaca continues its collaboration with the Nicosia International Festival. Theatre ROI presents the Cyprus premiere of their latest production, shortly after its performances at the Istanbul International Theater Festival. Theatre ROI and Turkish Cypriot director and actor Derman Atik meet the acclaimed Turkish award-winner novelist and playwright Aziz Nesin (1916 – 1995) and bring to life a comedy he wrote in 1970.
More about the event:
Aziz Nesin, a satirical writer and committed political activist, is internationally acclaimed, and one of Turkey's most prominent literature figures. His rich body of literature and theatrical work has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Tolstoy Medal in 1989, and the Carl von Ossietzky Medal in 1993. In 1991, he was awarded the Abdi İpekçi Greek-Turkish Peace and Friendship Prize. Nesin was first introduced to Cypriot audiences through his play The Beast of the Bull, a production by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (1979) at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.
At the core of the story, we meet Sigen and Dicha, two widows who live in a big city and whose memories of their past still haunt them. Nonetheless, they remain steadfast in their refusal to surrender to the past and dare to dream of a new… romance. Their world takes a dramatic turn when they discover that a femicide serial killer is prowling the city. In Aziz Nesin's meticulously crafted work, elements of commedia dell'arte and Aristophanean irony become tools for the Theatre ROI cast to light up. The play has been previously performed in both Greece (National Theatre of Northern Greece – 2007) and Cyprus (ETHAL – 2008).
