About the event:
Echoing the hashtag #Never21 coined by the Black Lives Matter movement, this contemporary dance production by French-Malian choreographer and dancer Smail Kanouté pays tribute to the victims of gun violence in New York, Rio and Johannesburg… who will never turn 21 years old.
Never Twenty One puts on the Nicosia Municipal Theatre stage a vision of humanity, inspired by the heartbreaking reality of the violence that has resulted in so many senseless deaths of young Black men. The piece reflects on the impact of colonialism and racism and examines the persistence with ancestral rites as a way of affirming identity.
More about the event:
The three powerful dancers, perform very physical, intense movements rooted in street styles (krumping, popping), contemporary dance idioms, and the baile funk and pasinho of South America. Their graffitied torsos are inscribed with testimonials from victims’ families and the evils they have suffered. Like wandering spirits, they tell us about these stolen and broken lives.
